Media Advisory--Newport News Shipbuilding To Celebrate Keel Authentication for Virginia-Class Submarine Montana (SSN 794)

What: Media are invited to attend a celebration to authenticate the keel of Virginia-class submarine Montana (SSN 794) on Wednesday, May 16 at Newport News Shipbuilding. The ceremony is not open to the public.

Who: Former Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell is the submarine’s sponsor. Ceremony participants will include Newport News Shipbuilding President Jennifer Boykin, U.S. Navy representatives, including Montana crew members. Mariah Gladstone, a young woman from the Blackfeet Nation in Montana, will perform a Native American blessing of the ship.

HII will host a Facebook live stream during the keel authentication ceremony.

Where: Media will park in designated spots in the second-shift area of Newport News Shipbuilding’s North Yard parking lot (directions below). Media will be transported by van to and from the site. The event will be held inside the Supplemental Module Outfitting Facility (SMOF).

Montana (SSN 794) is the 21st ship of the Virginia-class and the 10th that will be delivered by Newport News. The submarine currently is about 46 percent complete.  Two of its crew members hail from the state of Montana.

  • Construction start: April 1, 2015
  • Target delivery date: Late 2020

Please note that this is an industrial setting. Long pants, shirts with sleeves covering shoulders and flat, sturdy, closed-toe shoes are required attire. Hard hats will be provided.

Directions to Media Parking:

  • From I-64 (either westbound or eastbound)
  • Take Exit #264 to Interstate I-664 toward Downtown Newport News/Suffolk
  • Take Exit #5 (35th Street) to Warwick Blvd.
  • Travel approximately 3 miles on Warwick Blvd.
  • Immediately after 69th Street, make a U-turn on to Huntington Ave.
  • Merge into the right lane and continue to bear right on to Shipyard Drive
  • Continue downhill and follow signs to media parking
