NEWPORT NEWS, Va., Dec. 19, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE:HII) announced today that its Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division donated more than $13,500 and more than 28,000 pounds of non-perishable food to the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank during the shipyard's annual holiday food drive.

"The annual food drive is a highlight of the holiday season for our shipbuilders," said Chavis Harris, NNS' director, EEO, Diversity and Corporate Citizenship. "It reminds us of how fortunate we are, and there's no better way to demonstrate Newport News Shipbuilding's spirit of giving than to give food to our neighbors who are in need."

The food drive also sparks the competitive spirit of shipbuilders across NNS. Of the shipyard's total food donation, just over 10,000 pounds was contributed by one department, Nuclear Overhaul Engineering. Of NNS' total monetary contribution, more than $5,000 was donated by the shipyard's Nuclear Engineering Reactor Services department.

"There is perhaps no greater basic human need than food and sustenance," said Loretta Jones-Knauth, chief development officer, philanthropy and communications, Virginia Peninsula Foodbank. "Newport News Shipbuilding's generosity represents more than just food for the hungry—it instills hope. Hope for hard-working citizens under extreme pressure to provide food for their families, paycheck to paycheck. Hope for our neighbors here who are struggling through hard economic times. Hope for people making critical decisions on whether they pay for medicine, rent, heat or food. Hope for seniors, kids—people of all ages—who are suffering from hunger and need in our community."
